Combat acne with this honey and cinnamon face mask

Raw honey – ah, how sweet it is! Use it to sweeten a cup of tea, to bake sweet treats, or to enhance the nutty flavour of a pecan pie – it’s pretty versatile. Honey is also a natural humectant, which means it’s a fantastic moisturiser, and it also has antibacterial properties that can help you spot-treat acne.

The honey and cinnamon face mask recipe I’m about to share with you is amazing. It will brighten your complexion, soothe any irritations, and clear up acne. Please just note that cinnamon can irritate very sensitive skin, so do a patch test before applying the mask to your entire face if your skin is sensitive.

Four things you have in your kitchen that you can use to lighten your skin

Dull or dark skin is usually a result of too much sun exposure, environmental pollution, poor lifestyle choices, stress, or prolonged use of chemical-based cosmetics.

Many of us work hard to achieve fair and flawless skin. The market’s flooded with skin-lightening lotions and potions. But most of these products are brimming with harmful chemicals that can ultimately damage your skin! Oftentimes, they’re really expensive, too.

You can save yourself some time and money by using these effective natural remedies to lighten and brighten up your complexion. The best part? You probably already have most, if not all, of them in your kitchen!

Four ways to lighten your skin naturally

#1: Plain yoghurt

Yoghurt, a by-product of milk, contains many nutrients that your skin will just love. It also contains lactic acid, which has natural bleaching properties. Try one of these remedies, which are suitable for any skin type:

  • Gently rub plain yoghurt onto your skin. Leave it on for 10 to 15 minutes, then rinse it off with warm water. Do this once daily for several weeks for a noticeably lighter complexion.
  • Mix one tablespoon of plain yoghurt with one teaspoon of raw honey. Apply the mixture to your face and neck. Leave it on for 15 to 20 minutes, then wash it off with warm water. Do this daily to improve your skin tone and brighten your complexion.
  • Add two drops of lemon juice to some oatmeal and plain yoghurt to form a thick paste. Apply the paste as a face mask. Leave it on for up to 20 minutes, then rinse off with cool water. Use this mask whenever your skin requires some moisture.

#2: Fresh oranges

Yup, you guessed it – the most important ingredient in skincare is vitamin C! That’s why oranges are great for your skin – because they’re abundant in this vitamin. Plus, they have bleaching properties that can lighten up your skin tone. You can use oranges in these different ways to whiten your skin:

  • Combine two tablespoons of fresh orange juice and a pinch of powdered turmeric. Apply the mixture to your face and neck before bed. Wash it off after 20 to 30 minutes. Do this daily. PS: You can use this mask on your hands and legs, too!
  • Grind dried orange peels into a powder. Mix one tablespoon of the powdered peels with one tablespoon of plain yoghurt to make a paste. Apply the paste to your skin. Leave it on for 10 to 15 minutes, then rinse off with cool water. This will help lighten sun spots and other marks on your face. Don’t do this more than twice a week.

#3: Lemons

The acidic property in lemons works as a very effective bleaching agent for skin. Plus, the high content of vitamin C in these fruits encourages new cell growth. There’s no wonder they’re great for achieving a radiant complexion! Here’s how to use lemons on your skin:

  • Dip a clean cotton ball in fresh lemon juice and apply it directly to your face. You can even rub a cut lemon directly over dark areas of your face and allow the juice to stick to your skin. Leave the juice on for at least 30 minutes, then rinse your face with cool water. Do this once daily. This remedy is amazing for preventing the development of scars on your face.
  • Mix one teaspoon of lemon juice with a bit of powdered milk and raw honey. Apply the mixture to your skin. Leave it on for 15 to 20 minutes, then rinse your face with warm water. Do this daily or every other day.

#4: Aloe vera

Aloe vera can alleviate pigmentation problems and restore your skin’s original colour. Hyperpigmentation is one of the main causes of an uneven skin tone. If you don’t have your own aloe plant, you can buy aloe vera gel at the supermarket or pharmacy. This is how you can use aloe to cool down your skin and help with skin cell regeneration:

  • Cut the outer layers of an aloe vera leaf. Squeeze out the thick, jelly-like substance. Apply the jelly thoroughly to your skin. Leave it on for about 20 minutes, then wash it off with warm water. Do this at least twice daily for two weeks for best results.

Important to note: When you use any of these remedies, be sure there aren’t any open wounds on your skin. Although natural, these remedies are pretty strong and may sting or inflame broken skin.

Here’s why the pomegranate is the anti-ageing queen of fruits

For years now, you’ve known that eating pomegranate seeds and drinking pomegranate juice is a healthy thing to do. The fruit is high in vitamin C, polyphenol compounds, catechins and anthocyanins. Those qualities alone make this ruby red fruit a nutritional powerhouse to include in your diet regularly and to fight free radical damage to your DNA.

But there’s even more you should know about pomegranates that make them both a powerful disease fighter as well as an effective anti-ageing substance. Want to find out more? Then read on.

The anti-ageing benefits of pomegranates

Pomegranates are incredible, somewhat mystical fruits. The world of natural medicine has been using the seeds of this fruit for centuries to treat stomach aches, conjunctivitis, osteoporosis, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, viruses and even diabetes. Yet, it wasn’t until pretty recently that researchers found out about the fruit’s impressive anti-ageing properties.

Pomegranates contain active compounds that stimulate keratin cells, which are the cells present in healthy, youthful skin. These compounds also help stimulate collagen and elastin production, helping preserve firmness, tone and volume.

Another skin-loving compounds that pomegranates contain is punicic acid; an omega-5 fatty acid that helps your skin hold onto collagen. It also helps rehydrate skin and prevent moisture loss, giving your skin a plumper, more radiant look.

Due to pomegranate’s natural rejuvenating effect on skin, anti-ageing experts have deemed this fruit an ultimate natural anti-ageing solution. And that it is! Pomegranates can help improve skin tone, texture and elasticity, as well as prevent fine lines, redness, dark spots and wrinkles.

Benefits of this coconut oil lotion

  • It’s non-greasy
  • It has flexible ingredients (you can use pretty much whatever you have on hand)
  • It smells delicious
  • It helps keep your skin hydrated for longer
  • It helps improve blood circulation

Nourishing hand and body coconut oil lotion recipe

You’ll need:

  • 1/4 cup coconut oil
  • 1/8 cup shea butter
  • 1/8 cup cocoa butter
  • 1 tbsp aloe vera juice
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 5-10 drops coconut essential oil

  1. Heat the shea butter, coconut oil and cocoa butter over low heat until melted.
  2. Remove from the heat.
  3. Stir in the aloe vera juice, olive oil and coconut essential oil. Make sure it’s combined well.
  4. Store the lotion in a container of your choice. I recommend small canning jars.

This lotion is solid at room temperature (just like coconut oil in its solid form), but it’s not too hard. It softens up really quickly in your hands.

How to use coconut oil lotion

If you want seriously soft and smooth skin that’s noticeably healthy, use your homemade lotion like this:

  1. Apply a little warm water to your arms, legs, hands, feet and elbows (areas of your body that are likely to be dry).
  2. Smooth the coconut oil lotion all over your body before bed. When you wake up, your skin will be intensely nourished and much happier (and healthier, too).

You can also keep the lotion in a small container (like an empty lip balm container) and use it on your lips, face and hands whenever these areas of your body feel dry. It’s a really practical product to keep in your handbag or on your desk at work. Especially during the cold winter months when your skin’s prone to dryness!

Why use jojoba and rose water to cleanse your skin

If you haven’t already figured it out, this natural cleanser is made up of two ingredients: Jojoba oil and rose water.

So what’s so special about these ingredients?

Firstly, oil attracts other oils. So cleansing your face with jojoba oil really does make sense. You’ll be amazed at what shows up on your cotton ball at the end of the day.

Also, jojoba oil is more similar to sebum (the oil in human skin) than other vegetable oils. Therefore, it’s a natural for using in your face and body care routines.

And rose water, lastly, is ultra-refreshing, and can help keep your skin hydrated.

The jojoba and rose water cleansing routine

You’ll need:

  • Jojoba oil
  • Rose water spray (you can make your own using rose essential oil and water, or purchase it ready-made)
  • Cotton balls or cotton cosmetic pads
  • Muslim face cloths

  1. Moisten a cotton ball or cosmetic pad with warm water.
  2. Add three drops of jojoba oil to the cotton ball or pad.
  3. Gently wipe over your entire face and neck.
  4. Generously moisten the Muslim face cloth with warm water and apply to your face. Hold for at least five seconds. Rinse and moisten again with warm water and apply to your neck, holding for five seconds again. This step is really important – it will help improve your skin’s circulation and promote good health.
  5. Spray your face with two sprays of organic rose water.
  6. Place two drops of jojoba oil on the palms of your hands and smooth gently over your face and neck.

And that’s it! Quick and easy. Plus, chemical-free and wonderfully soothing.
