The simple spa ritual you should be doing at home for youthful skin

As someone who’s been a skincare freak for about as long as I’ve had to wear a bra, it’s safe to say that my skin has undergone many, many facials. My poor face has been poked and prodded, squeezed and swaddled, moisturised and masked for more than a decade.

While my inner masochist loves when someone uses a Medieval-looking tool to extract build-up in my pores, I must say that my favourite part of the experience is the pre-extraction steam.

So now you’re wondering how I could possibly favour having warm water blasted at my face in a cloud form when there’s also a shoulder massage to consider, right? Well, I don’t have a good answer for you there, but I will say that there’s something about the steam that makes me feel as if I’m dolling up for a big event.

And, that’s exactly why I’ve started incorporating steam into my self-care skin routines. The ritual I’m about to share with you is one you simply must try if clear, cleansed skin is something you stand for!

The benefits of steaming your face

You’ll end up with:

  • Fresh, clean skin
  • Unclogged pores
  • A soft, supple face
  • A clear complexion
  • A youthful glow

Can we now agree that I’m not a weirdo for enjoying nearly choking in a cloud of steam? Great! Now, here’s how to do it…

How to steam your face at home for skin that’s simply gorgeous

When it comes to steaming my face at home, I’m head-over-heels in love with using a wildflower herbal steam blend, such as Hi Wildflower Botanica’s Herbal Steam. It’s fantastic because it contains some super-powerful, all-natural dried botanicals that are what I consider to be little skin-saving powerhouses.

On their own, ingredients such as calendula, lavender and rose petals are fabulous for your complexion. But, when combined with each other and additional plants and spies, the results are nothing short of amazing – trust me!

All you have to do is boil up some water and fill up a bowl, add your herbal steam blend to the bowl, then tent a towel over your head and relax while the steam does its thing for up to ten minutes.

It may sound like torture, but I promise it’s all worthwhile! After I steam my face, the immediate result is usually a rosy, dewy glow. Once my skin cools down, my complexion appears clearer and my pores minimised. I love applying a natural oil (such as jojoba or coconut oil) to my face after steaming. I mean, is there anything more luxurious?!

Added bonuses: Steaming helps clear up congestion, and you can drink your herbal brew as a tea afterwards if you feel so inclined!
