Let me tell you something: I love vintage garments… Not only for their musty, comforting smell, but also because they’re just so trendy! Why always shop at the mall and give in to long queues and exorbitant price tags when you can pop into one of the many beautiful little vintage stores our city has to offer? Browse through timeless clothing and accessories at these nifty stores, where you’ll be pleasantly surprised at what you’ll find at bargain prices!
#1: Afraid of Mice
This trendy store is full of rare classic items that, as its pay-off claims, “you wish your mother had kept for you”. Pop in and get ready for excessive browsing! The rails are clean and uncluttered, and boast gorgeous garments that have been hand-selected. Most pieces are either one-of-a-kind or imported. It’s certainly a far cry from your average second-hand store. The emphasis here is on quality, individuality, seasonality and detail – you know – a lace bow here, pretty stitching there.

#2: Stock Exchange
This swanky store specialises in second-hand designer wear for ladies. With a fixed focus on only the best quality apparel and accessories produced by high-end luxury labels – think Zara, Chloe, Jimmy Choo, Armani and Prada – this store is a veritable gem for those of you seeking international branded garb at a fraction of the normal cost! I can assure you that all items are in tip top condition, and are strictly no more than two seasons old. They have a broad range of sizes tailored for all shapes and sizes, so you can be sure you’ll find something that fits you perfectly.

#3: Portobello Road
Named after the famous Portobello Road, which goes straight through the heart of Notting Hill, a trendy area of London, this super-cute little store is home to an abundance of vintage clothing, accessories, gifts and décor items. What’s also fabulous is that they have a coffee bar in-store, which serves Origin coffee and Dilmah premium teas. They also make the most divine breakfasts, lunches and cupcakes, so you can have a bite to eat after you finish your shopping.
313 MAIN ROAD, KENILWORTH
#4: Second Time Around
Having been around since 1972 (that makes it somewhat vintage in its own right, doesn’t it?), this place is a vintage gem of note! They have a big selection of unique, nostalgic garments on sale, which range from dramatic hats and fur coats to retro jewelry and original leather boots – cue hipsters – from the roaring 20s right up until the 90s. Quality and individuality is key here, as all items carry their own personalised tale. Everything is strictly still in excellent condition.

#5: Secondhand Rose
Reportedly Cape Town’s very first second-hand garments store, this Aladdin’s Cave of classic clothing pieces is certainly well-loved! They offer a broad spectrum of high-quality vintage collectibles, including cocktail dresses, evening wear, leather bags, Italian shoes, gloves and belts from the 20s through to the 70s. In addition to the fancy apparel, they also have stunning costume jewelry on sale, which is one of the store’s highlights – think clip-on earrings and marcasite brooches.
CAVENDISH CLOSE, WARWICK STREET, CLAREMONT
As you walk into Babette, you’re welcomed by a lovely wall covered with stills and portraits, flying ducks, framed embroidery and an ornate mirror. This store focuses on reworked vintage pieces, such as cut-off T-shirts, chiffon tank tops, floral skirts and feminine dresses from the 50s, 60s and 70s. Their abstract pieces are fit for any feminine, hipster or boho-chic fashionista! Also, look out for their must-have accessories, which include earrings, bowties, Alice bands and even dissembled watches reworked into pieces hanging on long bronze necklaces.
