If you think about it, just about every culture in the world endorses a fermented food or drink for its health benefits, and has done so for many centuries. Kefir is often at the top of the list!


Kefir is a creamy, drinkable yoghurt-style fermented milk. In its unflavoured and unsweetened state, it resembles buttermilk in taste and consistency. It’s made by fermenting milk with kefir grains composed of bacteria that produce yeast, lactic acid and polysaccharides.


Kefir is well-known for its probiotic-friendly yeast and bacteria, which can completely recolonise your intestinal tract. The regrowth of good bacteria in your gut is essential for total immunity. There are just so many reasons to consume this age-old beverage! Here are a few.

#1: Kefir offers many health benefits

A big variety of potential benefits from probiotics have been revealed through science, including improvement in intestinal tract health, strengthening the immune system, decreasing the prevalence of allergy in those who are susceptible, reducing the risk of certain cancers, treating colitis, lowering serum cholesterol concentrations, and lowering blood pressure in hypertensives.

Kefir is better than probiotic supplements because one capsule of manmade probiotics usually contains about 15 million beneficial bacteria, whereas one small glass of fresh kefir contains about 1.5 trillion. In probiotics, it’s all about the numbers!

#3: Kefir goes beyond yoghurt

Kefir contains certain beneficial bacteria that aren’t available in yoghurt. These include Lactobacillus Caucasus, Leuconostoc Acetobacter species, Streptococcus species, Saccharomyces kefir and Torula kefir.

This is because the fermentation process produces enzyme lactase.
