Drinking sugary drinks is super-risky even if you’re not gaining weight – here’s why

It doesn’t matter whether you’re slim, overweight or obese – drinking lots of sugary drinks will put you at risk of type 2 diabetes! That goes according to a new study published in the BMJ this week.

 

Up until now, health experts have thought that sugary drinks and type 2 diabetes correlate because sugar promotes body fat and weight gain. And this, in the long run, contributes to insulin resistance, which precedes diabetes.

 

But now, this new study removed weight as a factor. And still found that every daily serving of sugar-sweetened drinks increases any person’s risk of type 2 diabetes by 13% over ten years. Read on to find out more…

How sugary drinks can contribute to type 2 diabetes

Type 2 diabetes disrupts the way your body converts sugar from food into fuel. It causes serious problems if you leave it untreated.

Now let’s take a look at how much sugar the average soft drink contains…

Let’s use Coca-Cola as an example. One can of the stuff contains a whopping 39 grams of sugar – that’s equivalent to 9.75 teaspoons of sugar! This much refined sugar consumed at once causes a major spike in blood sugar.

Over time, this can increase insulin resistance even in people who are at a normal weight, study author Fumiaki Imamura of the MRC Epidemiology Unit at the University of Cambridge School of Clinical Medicine in England said.

“Our body is able to handle it, but cumulative effects over time exhaust the body’s functions and lead to the onset of diabetes,” said Imamura.

Imamura based these conclusions on data from 17 previous observational studies as well as his new one.

Swap out the sugary drinks for healthier options and prevent diabetes

If you’re a big fan of soft drinks (even diet soft drinks) or fruit juice, I hate to break it to you, but you need to start replacing these sugar-sweetened beverages with healthier options! That’s right, diet soft drinks and fruit juice are also bad for you and might have the same effect as regular soft drinks in terms of diabetes development, the study read.

Some great alternatives to sugar drinks are:

  • Plain water
  • Infused water
  • Milk (I especially love nut milks!)
  • Smoothies (you can sweeten them up with ingredients like goji berries and pineapple)
